Sierra Negra Volcano is considered the oldest of Isabela’s volcanoes. According to geologists such as Nordlie, the wider and less deep a caldera is, the older it tends to be. Sierra Negra is home to the second largest volcanic crater in the world, measuring approximately 6 miles (9.6 km) in diameter and 300 feet (91 m) deep—one of the most spectacular views in the Galápagos.
Wear comfortable hiking shoes, a waterproof poncho, a light jacket, sun protection, hat, a water bottle, and keep electronics in waterproof covers in case of rain.
Hike to Sierra Negra: A 12 km hike lasting about 3 hours along a moderately difficult trail with a gentle slope. From the rim, visitors can admire the immensity of the caldera.
Continue to Volcán Chico: The trail proceeds toward this still active volcanic area, where the ground radiates heat beneath your feet. The panoramic views from here are truly breathtaking.
Return: In the afternoon, the group heads back to the hotel.
